Cem Kaya ist ein Filmemacher aus Bayern. Nach dem Studium des Kommunikationsdesigns arbeitete er als Produzent, Cutter und Regisseur für Werbefilme und Musikvideos. Zusammen mit dem Filmproduzenten Jochen Laube drehte er seine ersten beiden Dokfilme in Spielfilmlänge: Arabeks (Arte, 2010, Co-Regie mit Gökhan Bulut) und Remake, Remix, Rip-Off (ZDF Das kleine Fernsehspiel, 2014), produziert von UFA Fiction. Während es in Arabeks um die Musikkultur der Binnenmigration in der Türkei ging, drehte sich Remake, Remix, Rip-Off um die türkische Filmindustrie Yesilçam und ihre Methode, Hollywood-Blockbuster für den heimischen Kinomarkt zu remaken. Kaya verwendet in seiner Arbeit umfangreiches Found-Footage- und Archivmaterial. Er montiert Ausschnitte aus Spielfilmen, Werbespots, Fernsehdokumentationen und privatem Filmmaterial zu witzigen Collagen. Die radikale Mischung aus gefundenem Material und eigenen dokumentarischen Beobachtungen sind die Zutaten für seine aufschlussreichen, manchmal skurrilen und oft urkomischen Doku-Essays. 

Cem Kaya is a filmmaker from Bavaria. After studying communication design, he first worked as a producer, editor, and director for commercials and music videos. Together with the film producer Jochen Laube, he made his first two feature-length documentaries Arabeks (Arte, 2010, co-directed with Gökhan Bulut) and Remake, Remix, Rip-Off (ZDF Das kleine Fernsehspiel, 2014), produced by UFA Fiction. While Arabeks is about the music culture of internal migration in Turkey, Remake, Remix, Rip-Off is about the Turkish film industry Yeşilçam and its custom of remaking Hollywood blockbusters for their domestic cinema market. Cem Kaya uses extensive found footage and archival material of various kinds in his work. He assembles clips from feature films, commercials, TV documentaries, and private footage into witty collages. This colorful mix of material and his own documentary observations are the ingredients for his extremely insightful, sometimes bizarre, and often hilarious docu-essays.
